The Westing Game

$10.00

This novel study was written for gifted fifth graders, and would be most appropriate for children ages 10 and older.

The main focus of this unit was to guide students to analyze text on a deeper level, gaining rich understandings of theme and descriptive language. Students will need to think, infer, and cite text evidence to support their answers. They will also need to be organized in their reading approach to keep track of details and clues and solve the mystery.

Students will meet objectives for deep thinking using a combination of discussion, independent and/or group readings (including close reading of selected sections), and answering high-level questions based on the icons of Depth and Complexity. These questions are designed to be high level and open-ended, so that students have to think critically about them to arrive at an answer, rather than straight from the text. Many questions will help students form deeper understandings of global concepts, which will aid in discussion, as well as culminating writing and extension tasks.
