This no-prep unit on the evolution of zoos over time was designed to integrate reading, writing, and higher-order critical thinking with science content. Using the thinking tools of Depth and Complexity, scaffolded questioning, and visible thinking strategies, students will read and respond to content in rigorous and authentic contexts, and will be able to connect and apply their understandings in new ways.

This unit is comprised of three Central Concepts which each build upon the previous. Each Central Concept is centered around a thinking focus and is comprised of 3-4 unique lessons that guide students to deep understanding of the subject matter. Each Central Concept contains assessment options, with summative assessment options and rubrics at the end of the unit. Pre- and post-assessments bookend the unit.

  1. Central Concept 1: Examining multiple perspectives on zoos

  2. Central Concept 2: Examining how zoos have changed over time and how perspectives have interacted with these changes

  3. Central Concept 3: Examining ethical questions about whether zoos should exist based on both perspective and changes over time

As a result of this unit, students will gain a greater understanding of perspectives on zoos and how zoos have changed over time. They will interact with the material and each other in authentic ways, and will be able to develop their own personal stance on the benefits of zoos to society.

Specifically, students will be able to:

  • Analyze perspectives on zoos, considering the value and validity of each

  • Examine and explain how zoos have changed over time, looking for patterns and trends to predict implications for the future

  • Synthesize learning to understand ethical implications of zoos, taking a stand on whether or not zoos should exist
